July 7, 1910 to October 15, 2009 Madge Dickson passed away peacefully at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Listowel on Thursday October 15, 2009. She was born 99 years ago in Usborne Township, a daughter of the late Charles and Lena (Madge) Hackney. Madge was a member of Atwood Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Women's Missionary Society and Maple Leaf Women's Institute. She was an avid supporter of the Leprosy Foundation and spent many hours knitting sweaters for children in developing countries. Beloved wife of the late Gordon Dickson who predeceased her in 1993. Loving mother of Don and his wife Sandy of Collingwood, Janice Purvis of Waterloo and Ross Dickson of Saskatchewan. Special grandmother of James and Wendy Dickson, Darren and Sarah Dickson, Brian and Jennifer Henderson, Susan Henderson and great grandmother of nine. Dear sister of Ida Hackney of Toronto. Fondly remembered by many nieces & nephews. Predeceased by her sisters Mabel Roger, Margaret Waddell, Laura Strickler and her brother Jim Hackney. February 6, 1924 to August 11, 2010 Mary Vallance, OMM C.D. Officer of the Order of Military Merit, formerly of Atwood, passed away peacefully at Knollcrest Lodge, Milverton, on Wednesday August 11, 2010 at the age of 86. Mary was a member of Atwood Presbyterian Church where she served as elder and a former member of the Atwood Lioness Club. She was a retired Colonel in the Canadian Forces serving from 1954-1976. Mary implemented the Status of Women Commission Rulings which allowed Service Women to assume any military position. She was directly responsible for all women personnel. Mary holds the distinction of being the first female Colonel and served as Aide-De-Camp to the Governor General. Dear sister of Joan Treleaven of Pennsylvania, Jim and Rhea Vallance of Stratford and sister-in-law of Ann Vallance of Toronto and Ken Nethercott of Listowel. Fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by her parents Lloyd and Annie (Lochead) Vallance, her brothers George and John (Jack), her sisters Aldous and her husband Jack Sargent, Helen (Honey) Nethercott , brother-in-law Bill Treleaven and nephew John Nethercott. October 3, 1936 to December 5, 2015 Douglas Evans of Ethel, passed away unexpectedly at Guelph General Hospital on Saturday December 5, 2015 at the age of 79. Doug owned and operated Evans Hardware in Ethel and drove school bus for many years. He was a former volunteer firefighter serving on the Ethel Fire Department. Doug will be remembered by his friends and neighbours for his friendship and commitment to his community over the years. Doug was a family man and cherished the time spent with his family. Beloved husband of the late Jean (McFarlane) Evans who predeceased him in 2011. Loving father of Cindy and Paul Fallis, Bonnie and Steve Conners, and Roger Evans. Harry enjoyed spending time at Belwood Lake with his family and fixing lawn mowers. He was a former bush pilot in Northern Ontario and worked for Forwell’s Sand and Gravel for over 25 years. October 3, 1943 - Feburary 7, 2021 Donald McIntosh – Don passed away suddenly at home, early Sunday morning February 7, 2021 at the age of 77. Devoted husband and best friend of Pat for over 57 years. Don will be missed by his sons Scott (Lisa), Christopher (Chris), grandkids Mackenzie and Layne, his brother-in-law Len (Carol) and many friends from over the decades. A lifelong resident of Elma Township, Don was a former Lions Club Member, serving a term as President. Don spent a lot of time volunteering to better the community through the Lions Club in his younger years. He was also an electrical contractor and transport driver. Don had loved playing Lost Heir with his numerous Atwood friends, spending time with Pat and family at Lake Nipissing, boating, fishing, RVing with Pat and showing the grandkids who was the master at cards. Don was one of a kind, loved and respected by many and very proud and extremely interested in all of his family and their activities. Also survived by his brother Gerry (Angel) and brother-in-law Merle, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. Predeceased by his mother and father Edith and Gourley, his sister Karen, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Joan and Len, brothers-in-law Greg and Dana, sister-in-law Donna and niece Laurie. A private family funeral service will be held at Brenneman Funeral Home, Atwood with Jeff Hawkins officiating.
