    June 5, 1950 to December 28, 2019 Alan Maedel - of Mitchell, formerly of Monkton, passed away surrounded by his family, at Stratford General Hospital on Saturday December 28, 2019 at the age of 69. Alan’s greatest love was his family. While he enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing pool, it was the time he spent with the people around him that mattered most. He never missed an opportunity to support his family or friends in their endeavours. Alan was a devoted father to Chris (Liz), Jeff (Angela) and Lindsay (Andy) Zaferis. He was a doting grandpa to Henry, Evelyn, Elena and Niko. He was a cherished son of Betty Maedel and Carl Maedel (predeceased) and dear brother of Paul (Fern) Maedel, Liz (Tom) Goodyer, Colleen (Vince) Priestap. He will be fondly missed by his dog Lacey, his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Alan’s love of travelling, commitment to his family and his love of life, will be forever remembered.     November 6, 1944 to December 25, 2019 John Krugel – formerly of Milverton, passed away unexpectedly at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Listowel on Wednesday December 25, 2019 at the age of 75. John farmed at RR1 Monkton before moving to Milverton. He operated an egg business and chauffeured many friends and neighbours to their appointments. He was a former 4H member and leader and enjoyed woodworking and curling. Dear brother of Rose Wright and Verna Young. Fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his parents John and Dorothy (Illman) Krugel, his sister Marion Krugel and brothers-in-law Ron Wright and Alfred Young. Bert was a member of Atwood United Church. He enjoyed getting out in the community by mowing lawns, delivering eggs and strawberries. Beloved husband of the late Minnie (Bastien) Clarke who predeceased him in 2018. Dear brother of Mona and Albert Hutton. Remembered by the Bastien family and his nieces and nephews.     February 8, 1937 to December 22, 2019 Douglas Gofton – formerly of Fordwich and Kitchener, passed away peacefully at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Listowel on Sunday December 22, 2019 at the age of 82. Doug was a member of the Piston Rings Kitchener, worked for the City of Kitchener for 25 years and in his earlier years enjoyed motorcycling and woodworking. He was an all-around handyman being able to fix almost anything. Doug loved spending time with his family and friends. Beloved husband of Frances (Finley) Gofton whom he married in 1966. Loving father of Doug (Susan) and Dave (Bev). Special grandpa of Josh (Heather), Amy and Katie.     December 3, 1920 to November 9, 2016 Mary Broughton – formerly of Atwood, passed away peacefully at Knollcrest Lodge, Milverton on Wednesday November 9, 2016 at the age of 95. Mary was a member of Atwood United Church where she held many different offices and had the distinction of being the first female elder. Beloved wife of the late Jack Broughton who predeceased her in 2007. Loving mother of Pauline Curran and John Broughton (Linda). Special grandma of Jamie Curran (Mary Fran), Mark Curran (Becca) and Jeremy Bedard. Great grandma of Kaye-Loni (Alex), Justin, Taylor (Curtis), Matthew and Nick and great great-grandma of Paizley and Delaiyna. Fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents John and Jean (McIntosh) Love, son-in-law Austin Curran and brother Ross (Bernice) Love. In keeping with Mary’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A private graveside service will be held in Elma Centre Cemetery, Atwood at a later date.     September 18, 1928 to November 6, 2019 Margaret Isabel Peebles – of Whitby, formerly of Listowel and Atwood, passed away at Taunton Mills Retirement Village, Whitby on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 in her 92nd year. Margaret was the former owner along with her husband Jack of J.A. Peebles and Sons Furniture and Funeral Services. She was an active member of Atwood Presbyterian Church serving as treasurer of the church for 28 years, treasurer of the former Ladies Aid and the former W.M.S. Evening Auxiliary as well as being a Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of the Maple Leaf Women’s Institute. Beloved wife of the late John (Jack) J. Peebles who predeceased her in 2010 after 62 years of marriage. Loving mother of Elizabeth, Scott and his wife Cheryl, grandmother of Brittany (Jordan) Ross, and great-grandmother of Brycen Scott Courtney. Also survived by her sister-in-law Laura Douglas and dear friends Myrna and Ronald Lenz. Predeceased by her parents A. Davidson Hamilton (1984) and the former Jane E. Rae (1978), her parents-in-law Johnston A. Peebles (1980) and the former Annie Mayburry (1985) and her brothers-in-law William (Bill) (1977), Kenneth (1981) and Walter Douglas (2015).     December 22, 1924 to November 4, 2019 Bruce Long – of Atwood, passed away peacefully at Listowel Memorial Hospital on Monday November 4, 2019 at the age of 94. Bruce was a life member and Past President (1970-71) of the Lions Club of Atwood and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and the Helen Keller Award for his 55 years of outstanding service. In his retirement, Bruce enjoyed woodworking, playing cards and helping his children and grandchildren renovate their homes. Beloved husband of Gertie (Scholl) Long with whom he would have celebrated 70 years of marriage with on November 5. Loving father of Douglas, Barry (Lynda), Karen (Bruce) Smith, Wayne (Jan) and Kenneth (Brenda). Special grandpa of Laurie (Gerry) Henderson, Bryan Long (Shannen McFadden), Derek (Laura) Smith, Shelley (Matt) Sessions, Courtney (Eric) Hopkins, Nichole (Kris) MacDonald, Jenna Long (Landon Moseson), Trevor Long (Christine Ladd), Jordan Long, Riley Long and great-grandpa of 15.     June 29, 1931 to October 25, 2019 Garnet Smith – of Brussels, formerly of Listowel, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, on Friday October 25, 2019 at the age of 88. Garnet was the founder of Atwood Resources (formerly Atwood Pet Foods). He was a life member and Past President (1975-76) of the Lions Club of Atwood and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and the Helen Keller Award. Garnet maintained a perfect attendance for over 50 years and was always apologetic when he had to miss a Lions Thursday night bingo for his annual trip to Nova Scotia. In his retirement, Garnet enjoyed wood working, playing music, curling, carpentry and spending time with his family and friends. Beloved husband of the late Doreen (King) Smith who predeceased him in 2016. Loving companion of Audrey Cardiff. Dear father of Diane Darroch (Allan Runhart), David (Cathy) Smith, Doug (Lorell) Smith, Darlene (Tom) Bowes. Special grandpa of 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Brother of Wava (Fred) Dubeau.
