George Smith

August 6, 1933 to March 12, 2017

formerly of Atwood, passed away peacefully at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Listowel on Sunday March 12, 2017 at the age of 83. George was a member of Atwood Presbyterian Church where he had served as Elder. He was a Life member of the Atwood Lions Club and a recipient of the Lions Club International Melvin Jones Fellowship, the foundations highest honor in recognition of his commitment to humanitarian work. He enjoyed horse racing, playing Lost Heir with his Atwood friends, NCO dancing and when living in Atwood, walking his poodles with his neighbor Jack Peebles. Beloved husband of Lillian (Pehlke) Smith with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. Loving father of Kevin (Julia), Cheryl Dominski (Andrzej), Ted (Cara) and Sean (Kate). Special grandpa of Mia, Michael (Charisse), Julianne, Travis, Kelsey, Jackson, Quinn, Emily, and Matthew. Fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Joan Pehlke and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Elgin and Hellen (Lochhead) Smith, infant son Brian, sisters Marian Dignard (Harry) and Ruth Gillespie (Nayland). Relatives and friends are invited to share their memories at the Brenneman Funeral Home, 141 John Street, Atwood (519-356-2382), on Sunday March 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Lions memorial service at 6:30 p.m. The funeral service to celebrate George’s life will be held at Atwood Presbyterian Church on Monday March 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ernie Naylor officiating. Spring interment in Elma Centre Cemetery, Atwood.
